Rubber Mulch Gym Flooring
A guide to rubber mulch and its variety of applications, particularly its usefulness as gym and playground flooring.
What is Rubber Mulch?
Recycled from old shredded tires, rubber mulch is made from EPDM or ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber. This provides an impact absorbent surface that is perfect for outdoor gyms, playgrounds, tracks and fields because it is durable, low maintenance, and safer than concrete or asphalt.
Rubber Mulch FAQ’s
What is the difference between rubber mulch and regular mulch?
A more practical alternative to wood chippings and bark mulch, rubber mulch is non-porous and doesn’t rot, making it extremely durable and long-lasting.
Rubber is also much heavier than wood, meaning it is less likely to blow away or become disrupted in bad weather. Another advantage of rubber mulch is that it is not edible; therefore, it does not attract mice or other pests. Its shape and material also mean weeds are less likely to take hold and grow, making for easier maintenance.
What do I put under rubber mulch?
Here at Be Active Gyms, we prepare the site for rubber mulch by removing weeds and turf and killing any grass to prevent it from growing through. We then put down landscape fabric to prevent the rubber from becoming compressed into the soil, and finally, we lay the rubber mulch that can be either loose or bonded to your preference. To find out more about this process, contact our team today!
How Do I Maintain Rubber Mulch?
If you have rubber mulch installed as flooring, it is important to sweep it regularly to remove any debris and prevent build-up. Gum and other similar substances should be removed immediately to prevent them from hardening and blocking the holes in the surface.
Once the debris is removed, these surfaces are easy to clean with just water, as they are materials that don’t rot! Pressure washers do an excellent job of power-cleaning rubber mulch.
How Long Does Rubber Mulch Last?
Being made of old tires, rubber mulch is extremely hard-wearing and durable; because of this, it lasts much longer than its natural counterparts. Contact our team to find out more about the specifics of how long rubber mulch could last as your gym or playground floor.
Top Uses For Rubber Mulch
Rubber mulch has a variety of useful applications that make it a desired material across a range of projects.
Gardens: Because of its recycled nature, rubber mulch is often used in gardens and other sustainable landscaping projects as a helpful drainage tool and pest repellant. Rubber mulch can also be used to suppress weed growth and, due to its insulating properties, can help keep soil warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Playgrounds & Outdoor Gym Flooring: Most commonly used as a shock absorbent flooring, rubber mulch is a much safer alternative than concrete or asphalt for high-traffic children’s play and gym areas. Whether it is bonded or loose, rubber mulch provides a soft, bouncy surface that is the perfect support for children’s games. It is also available in a variety of fun colours that help make the play ground or gym a brighter place.
